L’horloge atomique est un instrument de mesure du temps d’une précision extrême qui utilise les transitions énergétiques des atomes, neutres ou ionisés, comme référence. Pour les horloges les plus précises, les atomes sont refroidis pour augmenter la précision avec laquelle la transition peut être mesurée. Aujourd’hui, la référence de la seconde est fixée par une transition à 9 192 631 770 hertz dans le césium-133 et les horloges les plus précises ne perdent qu'une seconde tous les millions, voire milliards d'années. Elles sont indispensables pour de nombreuses applications modernes : synchronisation des réseaux de télécommunications, fonctionnement du GPS, tests de relativité, recherche scientifique fondamentale et maintien du temps universel coordonné (UTC).<br />
